Albert Kostenevich, born in (Irkutsk, Siberia), graduated Irkutsk State University (faculty of history and philology); first museum training  had in Irkutsk Art Museum (), in moved to Leningrad and entered the  Hermitage, Educational Department , then became post-graduate student at the Hermitage Museum, Department of European Art ().

From curator and later () Chief curator of European painting;  curator of French painting at the Hermitage Museum (from until now).

He constantly took part in organizing various major exhibitions: Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cezanne, Edouard Manet, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Georges Rouault, Jose Clemente Orozco, Rufino Tamayo, George Segal, and many others.

There were many articles published by Albert Kostenevich (more than hundred) and 43 books, mostly in Russian and some in French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese.
